WhatsApp guest calling is opening the platform’s calls to people who do not have a WhatsApp account. Announced on 14 October 2026, the feature allows invited guests to join through a computer browser, while an existing WhatsApp user creates and shares the call invitation.
In Meta’s official guest-calling announcement, the company described an invitation-based experience with host approval. The change could make occasional conversations easier to arrange when participants do not already use the same messaging service.
For people organising a project discussion, family conversation or appointment, the potential benefit is less preparation for an occasional participant. Instead of making account registration part of the meeting arrangements, organisers can consider whether a browser invitation suits the people involved.
How WhatsApp Guest Calling Works
The organiser starts in WhatsApp’s Calls tab, selects the plus icon and creates a call link. The recipient opens the invitation in a computer browser, enters a name and waits for the host to admit them.
Guests cannot see other participants’ phone numbers, send messages or directly add additional people. This makes it useful to agree beforehand where any documents or follow-up notes should be sent.
For an important appointment, the invitation should explain who is organising the conversation and what it concerns. Sending it in advance also gives the recipient time to check access rather than dealing with setup questions after the meeting has started.
Participant Limits, Call Duration and Costs
WhatsApp’s calling information describes group conversations with up to 32 participants, no call-duration limit and no separate WhatsApp calling charge. An internet connection is still required, and the company notes that data charges may apply.
That distinction matters for people using a limited data allowance or a metered connection. A service described as free does not necessarily mean the internet connection carrying the conversation has no cost.
Before arranging a lengthy video conversation, participants should consider their connection and available data. A brief microphone and camera check can also help prevent an otherwise straightforward meeting from being interrupted by avoidable technical problems.
Privacy and Control Remain Important
WhatsApp says its personal calls use end-to-end encryption. Its privacy information explains that personal communications are intended to remain between the people involved, rather than being accessible to WhatsApp.
Encryption does not, however, establish whether the person sending an invitation is trustworthy. Participants should confirm unexpected invitations with the sender and check who is present before discussing confidential information.
The same care applies to screen sharing. Closing unrelated documents and notifications beforehand can prevent personal information from appearing during a presentation. A browser-based meeting may be convenient, but ordinary decisions about what to share still matter.
The Update Follows Earlier Changes to WhatsApp Web
Guest calling follows a wider set of calling improvements announced earlier in 2026. In its 28 July announcement about WhatsApp Web calling, the company introduced browser-based audio and video calls, including one-to-one and group conversations.
That announcement also described screen sharing, reactions, call history and favourites through the browser. Other changes included transferring an active group call between devices, waiting-room controls, quicker access to high-definition video and noise suppression.
WhatsApp said those July features were being introduced gradually. The earlier announcement provides context for the latest development: browser calling expanded where conversations could happen, while guest participation broadens the invitation options available to organisers.
What the Change Could Mean for Everyday Conversations
The practical value will depend on the people taking part. A freelancer speaking with a prospective client, a community organiser contacting a volunteer or a relative arranging a family conversation may find browser participation worth considering.
For recurring meetings, it remains sensible to agree on a familiar process, a place to exchange documents and an alternative contact method if someone cannot connect. Reducing the registration burden is useful, but a successful conversation also depends on clear arrangements.
Calendar Integrations Are Also Planned
Meta’s October announcement outlined plans for Google and Outlook calendar integrations later in 2026. It did not provide an exact launch date in that announcement.
For now, anyone organising a call should choose around the participants’ access needs and check the options actually available to them before sending an important invitation.
